Day 5 port Augasta to Coober Pedy

I am almost speechless, pretty good for me!
I have been totally overwhelmed by how incredibly vast and diverse the country is.
Today we travelled about 540km leaving the very quiet streets of Port Augusta clearly a once thriving port now a smallish town.
 Sunrise in Port Augusta

We headed north and the landscape just kept changing, the beautiful Flinders ranges, vast empty barren land, scrubby undergrowth, emus, a wedge tailed eagle, sheep, goats and cattle roadside as the wide land is too immense to fence.

Today we saw our first road train (then more and more) the most amazing one had 6 army bush masters (troop personnel carries) on the back it was huge!

We stopped at Woomera, it was very eerie, like a ghost town, (didn't help being a Sunday) eventually some other travellers came through. Despite having many houses where people were living it felt incredibly desolate although you also felt you were being watched.

Woomera

We happened to stop at Lake Hart, a massive salt lake, it was spectacular!! We crossed the rail line and walked upon the lake, I later found out that apparently the police are chasing people away from the area(walking on the lake at least).

Today's drive was long and I was just a passenger, Brett has been doing a great job.
We arrived at Coober Pedy this afternoon, it's pretty much how I expected it to be. We visited Josephine's art gallery to see an indigenous artist at work and to visit the kangaroo orphanage, they currently have 7 kangaroos in their care. All victims of various accidents, one had been crushed by other kangaroos after stumbling, she was a paraplegic but they worked on her and she know has full use of one leg, partial use of the other but her tail is not overly effective..
Our accomodation is underground but a huge three bedroom apartment with kitchen so we enjoyed some home cooked spaghetti tonight with leftovers ready for tomorrow. Don't worry Leanne we rare heading out for lunch at Johns tomorrow.

Lewis jammin' on the didge

Coober Pedy Sunset.

We did a little bit of star gazing tonight too!
Our journey has been fantastic!

  1. How huge are those eagles, massive things...I remember that drive, nothing either side of the road, used to like to see the piano keys for something a bit different. Glad that you got to John's we loved that place....how amazing are the road trains how they drive those things is beyond me, though they only go straight, no corners for those guys.
