Day 13 -the rest of the day! Alice to Tennant Creek

Just before we left Alice a Springs I remembered to take our photos of the Todd River, it really is quite odd seeing such a deep sand bed with grasses and trees which is the main river of town.

As I have mentioned over the past few days, I still feel like I didn't get the chance to really see Alice a Springs, having said that we had two lovely days of great experiences but I just have this feeling that I missed a lot of the place.
Not long into our journey this morning we reached the Tropic of Capricorn perfect reason for a
photo!

Another day of 500 km and lots of different types of plant/scenery. I had expected this trip to be quite long and boring but was surprised by the number of places of historical interest where you can stop and have a stretch. We had a break at the Barrow Creek old telegraph station (also roadhouse/pub) the publican was a friendly bloke, very chatty and keen to ask me about my interest in any code of football, yeah well that pretty much ended our conversation, I tried, but in matters of football I have ....nothing!

The termites are incredible, some of the roadside mounds have been dressed in shirts including Fluor work shirts, it's quite funny! I'll have try to get a photo (I've been busy with my granny squares and missed quite a few photos)

The old

And the new? This pub was built the same year as the Sydney Harbour Bridge

There has not been a great deal of wildlife on the ground to see through the centre although we did see a Dingo this morning not far from Alice (missed that photo op!) we had a few cattle cross the road today also. There is a lot of bird life and we are now becoming experts at recognising brown kites from black ones and whistling kites among others. I've loved seeing wild budgerigars and loads of finches.

Here are some more pictures of the Devil's Marbles. This was on Lewis's must see list

This afternoon, once we arrived in Tennant Creek we headed to the Information Centre and did a tour in a training mine. It was a great private tour and the kids had a great chance to ask questions as well as pose for photos. We planned to have a schnitzel tonight at the restaurant next door (part of the motel), kids eat free Monday, perfect! Except they didn't open! So we had to succumb to our first night of take away at Red Rooster which was a few minutes walk away.
 Everyone is very tired tonight.
Off to Mount Isa tomorrow.

My two bookworms, they will take just about any chance to stop and read
